Consumer Advocacy

My practice is mission-based, with the goal of helping to protect immigrant consumers from scams and bad advice from both lawyers and non-lawyers (‘notarios”).

I’ve been very involved in legislation in both New York City and New York State to protect consumers of immigration legal services, and I’ve advised on and testified in support of legislation outside of New York as well. I am also highly involved in a task force consisting of enforcement agencies, government offices, and community based organizations that seeks to further this mission. Where I can, I speak and write on issues related to consumer protection and attorney ethics.

This work also benefits my clients, as it has provided me with a good understanding of the questions and concerns of the communities that I serve, and of how I can effectively respond to these issues. The more informed I can be, the more I can empower my clients to avoid living in fear and to make informed, confident decisions regarding their immigration needs.
